Matthew Toogood

Matthew Toogood is an Australian conductor working in Germany.[1] In November 2022 he conducted the world premiere of the children's opera Pippi Langstrumpf (Pippi Longstocking), at the Komische Oper Berlin composed by Franz Wittenbrink and directed by Dagmar Manzel.[2][3] Earlier in 2022, he returned to Australia post COVID-19 pandemic to conduct the Australian premiere of Opera Holland Park's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, directed by Linda Thompson and produced by the Australian Contemporary Opera Company.[1]

Toogood conducted the world premiere of Björk's Vespertine composed as an opera by Kommando Himmelfahrt titled "Björk’s Vespertine: A Pop Album as an Opera" with the Nationaltheater Mannheim orchestra and soloists.[4] This was recorded and released as an album by OehmsClassics in 2019.[5]

He composed "Bush fire" as part of the National Young Composers Project in 2001.[6] Toogood led the Victoria Chorale between 2006 - 2007 and the artistic and musical director of Heidelberg Choral Society until 2010 .[7][8][9] He was chorusmaster and conductor of Melbourne Opera, last conducting Cavalleria Rusticana (Mascagni) & Pagliacci (Leoncavallo) in 2010.[10][11]

He married Ellen Leather in 2018 at Montsalvat Arts Centre.[20]
