Since 2014, Krasnodon Raion, including Khryashchuvate, has been controlled by forces of the Luhansk People's Republic (LPR / LNR).[2] Following the 2022 annexation referendums in Russian-occupied Ukraine, Russia has claimed the settlement as part of their LNR / LPR.
The Novosvitlivka refugee convoy attack occurred near the settlement in mid-2014, with refugees fleeing the War in Donbas. The Ukrainian Army retreated from the settlement, after fierce fighting, in late August 2014.[3]
The settlement came to the attention of global media in 2015 due to the extent of destruction there.[4]
