HWA International School

The HWA International School is an esteemed educational institution in Singapore that has undergone a few name changes throughout its history. Previously known as the Chinese International School and Hillside World Academy, the school has a rich and diverse history that spans many years. It is a K-12 international school, which means it provides education from kindergarten to grade 12. The school is recognized for its commitment to delivering an internationally recognized curriculum that is tailored to meet the needs of its students. To achieve this, the school runs the International Baccalaureate (IB) programme, which is designed to equip students with the knowledge, skills, and attributes they need to succeed in a globalized world.[1]

At HWA International School, students can enroll in the Nursery programme, which is specifically designed for children aged 2 to 3 years old. From there, they progress through the Primary Years Programme (PYP), which is meant for students aged 3 to 12 years old. This program focuses on building foundational knowledge and skills in various subject areas, including language, mathematics, science, social studies, and the arts.

The Middle Years Programme (MYP) is designed for students aged 11 to 16 years old, and it is meant to build on the knowledge and skills gained in the PYP. This program emphasizes critical thinking, inquiry, and problem-solving skills, as well as holistic learning that encompasses academic, personal, and social development.

Finally, the Diploma Programme (DP) is the culminating programme for students aged 16 to 19 years old. This program is designed to prepare students for higher education and beyond by providing a rigorous, challenging, and comprehensive curriculum that fosters intellectual, personal, and emotional growth.[2]

Overall, HWA International School is a school that is committed to providing an excellent education to its students, and its adoption of the IB programme is evidence of this commitment. The school's unique approach to education is designed to empower students with the skills, knowledge, and values they need to become responsible global citizens and leaders of tomorrow.

History

In the mid-2000s, the Economic Development Board (EDB) extended an invitation to the management of Huijia Private School in Beijing.[3] This invitation was to establish a Chinese international school in Singapore that would cater to the needs of Chinese expatriates. Responding to this invitation, the management of Huijia Private School founded the Chinese International School in October 2006. The school was situated on the premises of a former public school at 60 Dunearn Road.

Over the years, the Chinese International School evolved and expanded its academic offerings, programs, and campus facilities. This resulted in the relocation of the school in 2015 to a new location at 11 Hillside Drive.[4] As part of this relocation, the school was renamed the Hillside World Academy, which reflected its broader international outlook and global focus.

In 2023, the school underwent another name change and became known as HWA International School. This name change reflects the school's ongoing commitment to providing a world-class education that prepares its students for success in the global arena. HWA International School remains dedicated to providing an inclusive and diverse learning environment that fosters academic excellence, critical thinking, creativity, and character development.[5]
