Benjamin David
Benjamin David (Lausane August, 7, 1985) is a Swiss stage director[1] and artist known for his work in the field of opera, as well as for his contributions to experimental audience reception.
Early Life and Education
David's passion for the sciences led him to pursue a Master's degree in Life Sciences at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne. He later completed his advanced studies in Bioengineering at a start-up of the Berlin Charité.
Trajectory
In 2015, David founded the AGORA collective[2], which seeks to experiment with new bodily-sensory and institutionally-influenced modes of audience reception. With AGORA, he has directed several notable productions, including "Ulysse Exp. N°1" in Lausanne (2015), "Catarsi" at the Bavarian State Opera (2017), and "La Liberazione" at the Wuppertal Opera (2018). David's contributions to the world of opera extend beyond his work with AGORA. He was employed as a director at the Bavarian State Opera from 2011 to 2014, where he collaborated with renowned directors such as Krzysztof Warlikowski, Calixto Bieito, Andreas Kriegenburg, and La Fura dels Baus. He has also collaborated with directors David Bösch and Olivier Py in opera houses such as the Theater an der Wien, Opéra de Lyon, Bavarian State Opera, Zagreb Opera, and Opéra de Genève.
Awards
David was a fellow of the Deutsche Bank Foundation's Academy of Music Theater Today from 2014 to 2016. In addition to his work in the field of opera, he has also been involved in the direction of theatrical productions such as "Nabucco" in Dresden.
In 2023 he received the Traetta Prize (Italian: Premio Traetta), an award assigned by the Traetta Society, for his advanced conceptual research in theatrical productions, reinterpreting classic works of the European musical heritage in a contemporary light[3].
