6-hour run

A 6-hour run is a category of competitive running and is a type of track and field or road running athletics competition and often a form of ultramarathon. In these events, participants run as far as they can in 6 hours. They are typically held on 400-meter tracks or road loops.

Top runners will often run 60 kilometres (37.3 mi) or more, depending on conditions, and the best can go beyond 80 kilometres (49.7 mi). Some participants will have a crew to help them, but others will set up a table with all their gear and supplies by the side of the course. Often 6-hour events are combined with 12-, 24-hour run and 48-hour events. 6-hour runs have also been held in relay formats, with runners completing a mile each in succession for 6 hours. Not all 6-hour races are internationally sanctioned, and some are more for charitable purposes. Those that are sanctioned fall under the remit of the International Association of Ultrarunners (IAU) which organises the World Championships for various ultramarathon distances.

The women's world record for the event on all surfaces is 85,492 km, held by Nele Alder-Baerens (GER) and set in 2017 at the 6h-Lauf-Münster. The men's record is 98.496 km (61.203 miles) set by Aleksandr Sorokin of LTU in 2022, at the Bedford International Athletics Stadium[1]

Competitions

Currently there are no 6-hour championships being organised however the IAU have initiated the 6-Hour Virtual Global Solidarity run which first took place during covid in 2020 and this may form the basis for a 6-hour World Championship in the future.

The German website DUV currently lists 214 6-hour races that were scheduled for 2023, a figure that has tripled over the last 20 years.

Organisations

The International Association of Ultrarunners organises ultra running as an affiliate of World Athletics. These long-distance forms of competition fit within World Athletics disciplines.[2]
