Commune with Spirits

What does this actually do? ie. (Gather Information roll + DM circumstance bonus)? (Duplicate 'Ethereal Jaunt'at a caster level = Bender Level)? (Function as Animal Empathy does with rangers?) - However no specific category of 'Spirit' in D&D monster manual
