Talk:Death Knight, Variant (5e Subclass)

Okay, while looking through and editing this, I have come up with several clarification questions:

  • Is it correct that at level 3, you gain all of the features for Necrotic Overflow, all of the features for Death's Embrace, and the first three features from Glyph Spells.
  • For Overflow Damage, is 10 hit points lost cumulative, like Share My Fate, or is it for every interval of 10 HP below your maximum number of hit points that you add a die?
  • For Overflow Damage, what does it mean to "ignore 50% or resistance/immunity"?
  • For Overflow Damage how large is a "random adjacent tile"?
  • For Overflow Damage, the damage seems too high, especially for covering an area. The circle of spores druid, which seems somewhat comparable, does less damage, to one target, there is a save associated with it, and it only lasts for one turn.
  • For Reaping Strike, is the base number of dice used based on class level, or total player level?
  • For Share My Fate, are you supposed to keep track of compound damage until you take a short or long rest?
  • For Necrotic Bleed, Necrotic Infusion, and Deathbringer, how large is a 4x4, 6x6, and 8x8 area?
  • Does Attract Death use your reaction?
  • For Necrotic Rot what exactly is meant by regeneration?
  • For Death's Gift, do you recalculate the HP buff as your "actual" maximum HP changes?

Clarification is much appreciated. Coaldstone (talk) 15:14, 14 August 2019 (MDT)

I have my interpretation for what the creator had in mind, with some of those questions. I can try to rewrite this archetype's features to be more clear, if there's no one against it. Anastacio (talk) 19:44, 9 May 2020 (MDT) Well, is better to beg for forgiveness than to wait for permission. I've gone forward and changing some few things, but nothing mechanical. I put some features in a different order, just for better reading. Like, the Reaping Strike feature is the basis for many features, so, now, is one of the first things you read about this archetype. I would change a few things, so, some of my suggestions:

- Maybe create a resource called "necrotic energy die" to use as the basis for the features, instead of the Reaping Strike. this could be the resource used for everything you do with this class, kinda like the psi knight "psionic talent die". Or maybe give it some points to expend on the many features this class have.

- Change the damage progression to only one die that increases as you level.

- Add more non combat related stuff. Maybe under the "Glyph Spells" umbrella.

- IMO, the Reaping Strike should be applied once per turn; or, his damage should be much lower.

- Necrotic Bleed shouldn't affect random tiles, because, what if the DM uses only the "Theater of the mind" to play?

These are some of my concerns with this archetype. I will wait a couple of weeks. If no one disagree, i will try to make some changes to reduce the power of this class while maintaining all its quirks and features.Anastacio (talk) 14:38, 12 May 2020 (MDT)
