Hive Spawn

An elf enters a dark observatory, lost to the ages are countless shelves of knowledge, books waiting to be rediscovered. Mesmerise by the knowledge that he’s yet to explore, the elf has yet to notice the darkness lurking not just behind, but all around him, slowly encircling the area around him. The elf looks away from his book, terrified of what has no enveloped the space around him. He leaps through the dark force before it can swallow him, moving towards the only light he can see. The elf lands and looks back, seeing a monster of what looks like a tar-like substance, a constantly morphing blob of blackness. The blob begins to move toward the elf, but at a relatively slow pace. The elf walks away from the slop, knowing that even at a brisk pace it cannot keep up. He enters a large room with a telescope the size of at least ten of himself, seeing as the whatever it was won’t be upon him soon, the elf begins to investigate the telescope. He sees two moons, the stars, and the void of space between, he also sees that the telescope has a single button on it, with a function of the unknown variety. In the distance he hears a soft slapping of mush on the marble floors, so he takes a glance to the doorway, and whatever it is, it’s changed. Slowly the elf sees a black sludge figure outside the door frame, meandering towards the door, and it looks like a carbon copy of itself. Slowly from the shadows, more replicas of himself begin to walk toward the door, tens of them, and growing by the minute. The elf slams the door, and barricades himself inside the room. Not seeing another way out, he presses the button, and the telescope begins to shift, the large lens taking in the moonlight, and concentrating it, as it begins to burn through the door. The door is forced down, seeing now that the small figures now form a large hulking one. It now has a way in, but to the monster’s disadvantage, the moonbeam incinerates it’s form, leaving a small, humanoid goo monster cowering in fear of the weapon. The elf sees this, the fear in the creature’s eyes, and shows it mercy. He asks it if it can speak, and it replies in his own voice the same phrase, He asks it it’s origin, and slowly, surely, it begins speaking in a low hissing, the same voice of it’s once prey, now hunter. “We are one, it speaks, we are The Hive.” The elf sees it utter this, and immediately, the beast begins to shake violently, as if it were fighting itself. The creature looks up towards the elf, and gives a new answer, “I am me, no longer am I The Hive, I am free.” The elf is shocked, seeing as the creature now has a conscience, he ask what it wants. “I wish to live, I wish to be free.”
