The weapon is a short sword with a weighted end, using the momentum and inertia to deliver devastating strikes, despite it's small size. In addition, most Gladius had a point small enough to fit within chainmail hoops, making it ideal for piercing armor. While the Gladius could range in size from 23 inches to 32 inches, the majority were rather small, between a short and medium sized sword, with the handle taking up a disproportionate amount of the size on shorter weapons.
