Enfield

Physical Description

A Spirit Enfield by JaxxBlackFox

The modern-day Enfield is a mythological creature with the appearance of a fox and bird mashed together. Their head and body and tail are that of a fox. Their bird ancestry shows in their powerful wings, their sharp talons on their hands, and their additional feathers along their spines, tail, and chest. There are five subspecies of Enfield. The most common of these subspecies is field, whose ancestry is of red foxes and eagles. The other four subspecies are forest, descended from grey foxes and red-tailed hawks; shadow, descended from black foxes and great horned owls; and winter, descended from arctic foxes and snowy owls; and spirit, descended from silver foxes and ravens.

History

Celtic peoples believed in giving their dead a proper funeral. They both buried and cremated the remains of their fallen loved ones. The highly respected the corpses of those that they were related to and especially those of their leaders. Proper final action on the bodies would allow the spirits of the dead to rest peacefully.

This devotion to respecting the dead created a particular problem. At the time there were a lot of wars between tribes, clans and invaders because Celtic people were warriors. They found the greatest death came in the heat of battle. Their devotion to the final rites provided their enemies with a unique tactic. Opposing armies would work to capture dead bodies where they could, especially those of leaders. Disgracing corpses/ tearing them apart was intensely distressing and demoralizing to the troops because they believed the spirits of those lost would be forced to walk the earth eternally (until properly avenged).

This is where the idea of the Enfields seem to come in. The Enfields are seen as guardians of chieftains or leaders that were slain in battle. After the leader falls, an Enfield is said to appear by the dead man's side, protecting the body from enemies seeking to treat it with disrespect.

Society

Enfields tend to keep to forests preferring the company of nature to that of people. Most lead the lives of druids and bards. They usually have small families consisting of two parents and one to three children. They are very friendly and playful intelligent creatures. They are fond of good music, crackling fires, and travel well with others.
