Dimensionalist (3.5e Prestige Class)
Dimensionalist
“ | Look at this, it is a graphical representation of the great wheel. It shows how close the planes are, their relative locations, how they interconnect in a beautiful lattice of quasi-dimensional interlocking. What it doesn't show is that they spin. Both individual rotation and collective orbit. How the inner planes spin in a different way. It's enchanting. | ” |
—, Grey Elf Wizard/Loremaster/Dimensionalist, The Planar Dance |
Dimensionalists are those that know practically everything about the planes. They can see the way space twists around gates, how it bends at the casting of a summon spell, and the way it ripples in compliance with teleportation. Using this knowledge and insight, they are able to improve their magic and effortlessly alter the space around them.

Class Features
. All of the following are class features of the dimensionalist.
Spellcasting: At each level, you gain new spells per day and an increase in caster level (and spells known, if applicable) as if you had also gained a level in a spellcasting class to which you belonged before adding the prestige class level. You do not, however, gain any other benefit a character of that class would have gained. You must select the class in which you specialized in conjuration or necromancy.
Extra School of Specialization (Conjuration or Necromancy) (Ex): At 1st level, a dimensionalist gains either conjuration or necromancy as an additional school of specialization, and gains two additional forbidden schools. Spell slots gained from any specialization can be used for any school you specialize in. You can not specialize twice in the same school, you can not pick a specialized school as a forbidden school, and you can not pick a school already forbidden to you as a new forbidden school.
Spell Access: At second level, a dimensionalist may learn, prepare, and cast spells of any spell from a school that she is specialized in, even when that spell is not on her spell list.
Extra School of Specialization (Divination) (Ex): At 3rd level, you gain divination as an additional school of specialization, and gain one additional forbidden school. Spell slots gained from any specialization can be used for any school you specialize in. You can not pick a specialized school as a forbidden school, and you can not pick a school already forbidden to you as a new forbidden school.
Analyze Portal (Sp): At level 4, a dimensionalist may use Analyze Portal as the spell at will.
Ignore Dimensional Anchor (Su): At 5th level, a dimensionalist ignores dimensional anchor and similar effects.
Know Target Location (Su): When a 6th level dimensionalist witnesses a teleportation, plane shift or any similar effect, the dimensionalist may make a spellcraft check (for a teleportation) or a Knowledge (The Planes) check (for planar travel) to determine the exact location teleport to. DC=11+spell's caster level, requires 1 minute, must be used within 10 minutes of the teleportation attempting to be tracked.
Plane Shift (Sp): At 7th level, a dimensionalist may use Plane Shift as the spell A number of times per day equal to half his dimensionalist level.
Bonus Feat: At 8th level, a dimensionalist may gain a bonus feat as a wizard does.
Resist Antimagic Field (Su): When entering an antimagic field, a level 9 dimensionalist may make a DC 40 spellcraft check. If he succeeds, he may use his spell-like abilities and may attempt to use his spells within the antimagic field. To cast any spell in the antimagic field, a dimensionalist must succeed additional spellcraft checks, at a DC of 20+(2*spell level).
Dimension Door (Sp): At level 10, as a move-equivalent action, a dimensionalist may use Dimension Door as the spell at will.
Epic Spellcasting: At level 21 an epic dimensionalist gains Epic Spellcasting as a bonus feat, using Knowledge (the Planes) instead of Knowledge (Arcana) to determine epic spell slots.
The epic dimensionalist gains a bonus feat (selected from the list of epic dimensionalist feats) every 3 levels after level 10.
Epic dimensionalist Bonus Feat List: An epic dimensionalist may select any feat on the wizard bonus feat list as an epic bonus feat.
Ex-Dimensionalists
Playing a Dimensionalist
Combat: A dimensionalist plays much the same role as a wizard, but generally there is somewhat more of an emphasis on crowd control, since she lacks some of the flashy spells that wizards are known for. Additionally, a dimensionalist may act as a supplementary healer, since healing spells are all part of the schools of necromancy and conjuration.
Advancement: A typical dimensionalist is a wizard; as such they can easily fill the requirements of the favorable geometer class, or could almost as easily be a loremaster. The lack of school versatility means they are incapable of becoming an Archmage, or any other class which requires such versatility.
Resources: In a given setting, there may or may not be one or more colleges, leagues, or guilds of dimensionalists. If there are, and they offer resources to alumni or members, then a given dimensionalist may or may not have access to them. How dimensionalists come about by a wizard studying into her chosen specialization until she decides that the other schools are only holding her back; since she can do this in either solitude or as part of a larger collective, becoming a dimensionalist does not guarantee membership to a college, league, or guild.
Dimensionalists in the World
“ | While the outer-planes of the great wheel are fixed in place relative to one another whilst they spin, the inner-planes rotate in and amongst each other in strange, braided paths. The exceptions are the planes of positive and negative energy, which at all times stay adjacent to one of the upper planes and lower planes, respectively. | ” |
Dimensionalists are sages; they know almost everything there is to know about the planes. Dimensionalists are often become teachers and wise men, acting as repositories of information all things planar. Because of their ability to cast any conjuration, necromancy or divination spell, they are occasionally also healers, and may act as a diviner.
NPC Reactions: Dimensionalists are perceived in much the same way as wizards, though the power to heal can greatly reduce any stigma someone has towards them.
Dimensionalist Lore
Characters with ranks in Knowledge (Arcana) or Knowledge (The Planes) can research dimensionalist to learn more about them. When a character makes a skill check, read or paraphrase the following, including information from lower DCs, except 1.
DC | Result |
---|---|
1 | The damentionalests is the most damentional. |
6 | Dimensionalists know everything there is to know about the planes. |
11 | Dimensionalists can teleport at will. |
16 | ...But only over short distances, and they can also usually plane shift. |
21 | Names and locations of various dimensionalists. |
26 | Dimensionalists are able to track teleportations. |
Dimensionalists in the Game
Dimensionalists are conjurers and necromancers that have perfected their craft to the exclusion of all else. This has earned them respect, disdain, fear and hatred amongst their peers and the masses alike. Their knowledge of the plains is an asset to any school, and their ability to overcome obstacles in their spellcasting is an asset to any magical army. Of course, some dimensionalists may be indistinguishable from other wizards by behavior alone, since there's nothing stopping them from living in an anonymous tower secluded from the rest of the world.
Adaptation: This class is essentially school specialization taken to it's logical extreme. As such, variations based on other specializations are conceivable. For example: illusion and enchantment, perhaps called "mentalist" or something a little more creative, with relevant abilities. These abilities may include resistance to mental effects, resistance to illusions, and the ability to take control of the illusions of others. Other variations could include evocation and abjuration as well as one involving transmutation.
