In the deserts of Orre, a Trainer named Wes rides around with his motorcycle. After defeating a Trainer in battle, he arrives at Outskirt Stand, where he notices two men, Folly and Trudly, harassing a young girl. He gets their attention by throwing a Poké Ball into Trudly's groin, causing him to fall over in pain. Angered by his intervention, they send out two Whismur to battle him, which Wes responds to by calling forth his partner, Espeon and Umbreon. The two Whismur use Tackle, but Wes's Pokémon easily dodge them. Espeon uses Confusion on one of the Whismur, before Umbreon finishes both of them off. Defeated, Folly and Trudly run off.

The girl Wes rescued rushes at Wes, but instead of thanking him, she runs right past him to hug Espeon and Umbreon, much to Wes's annoyance. The girl introduces herself as Rui, while Wes introduces himself to her as well.

Suddenly, Folly and Trudly return, accompanied by a Trainer with a mohawk. He sends out a Quilava, and Rui immediately notices a strange black aura coming from it. She informs Wes of this, but Wes can't see anything unusual about the Quilava. Quilava attacks Umbreon with Ember, but Umbreon easily dodges the incoming fireballs with Quick Attack and hits Quilava, defeating it.

The opposing Trainer responds to his Pokémon's defeat by sending out a Croconaw and a Bayleef, both of which have black auras as well. With the battle now a 2-vs-2 Double Battle, Wes calls forth Espeon as well. Croconaw attacks with Water Gun, which Espeon counters with Psychic.
